  • Preparation of Ultrafine Metal Powder by Ball Milling

    views, Updated: 2021-09-29
The superfine metal powder has the characteristics of small size and large specific surface area. The metal parts made from it have excellent mechanical properties, special magnetic properties, high conductivity and diffusivity, high reaction activity, and catalytic activity. Therefore, ultrafine metal powder materials can be widely used in aerospace, ship, automobile, metallurgy, chemical industry, and other fields.

Ultrafine metal powder can be prepared with mechanical and physical methods. The mechanical method is a kind of processing method by which the bulk metal is broken into powder with mechanical force. It can be divided into mechanical impact grinding method, airflow grinding method, ball milling method, and ultrasonic grinding method. Here, we would share the preparation method of ultra-fine metal powder - ball milling method in the mechanical method.

The ball milling method is mainly divided into the rolling ball method and vibration ball milling method. This method uses the mechanism that metal particles are broken and refined due to deformation at different strain rates. It has the advantages of low selectivity to materials, continuous operation, and high production efficiency. It is suitable for dry grinding and wet grinding and can be used to prepare powder for various metals and alloys. The disadvantage is that it is difficult to grade in the process of powder preparation. Its simple process and large output can be used to prepare some ultra-fine nano powders of high melting point metals and alloys, which are difficult to obtain by conventional methods.
